Safety critical work
The term “Safety Critical Work” is defined as “Where the ill health of an individual may compromise their ability to undertake a task defined as safety critical, thereby posing a significant risk to the health and safety of others.” (CBH, 2015).
Safety-Critical Work (SCW) medicals identify if there is any risk or likelihood of employees developing a health problem, that could cause them to be suddenly taken ill whilst undertaking their work. There are certain tests that can be done to highlight any such chances, and reduce the risk to employees and others..
Why do we need them?
It is important that safety critical workers are not suffering from medical conditions or undergoing any medical treatment. Either of which is likely to cause sudden loss of consciousness or incapacity, impairment of awareness, concentration, balance or coordination or significant limitation of mobility.
Who qualifies for a safety critical medical?
If you have workers who are undertaking safety critical tasks such as operating plant machinery, working on scaffolding at height, roadside construction or any other job that involves risk, then making sure they are healthy enough is imperative to them and your business.
